Sketch:
Bobby- The first segment in today’s episode of Calm Before the Storm, Aiden, Lizzy, and myself will be discussing our selected majors, why we chose what we chose, and to see where our future paths may take us.
Bobby (transition)- So Lizzy as we were talking backstage, you told me that your major is social work. Can you talk further on why you chose it?
Lizzy- well i chose…
- well I wanna do social work but with the 4+1 program. Which is getting your bachelors and masters in 5 years.
- I plan on going down the path of being a children’s therapist for ages 10-14.
- I work alot in elementary schools with kids and notice that I connect more with the kids and that they need to have a lot more help.
- Being a freshman with classes (is hard because you don’t learn any social work stuff until sophomore year)
- Being a therapist
- My goal is to eventually have my own practice
- As much as children can be a tad bit annoying which they are,you have to understand they are just navigating the world still
- I rather do kids than teenagers because I feel like if you get at them at the early age in life it will make a big impact in the future going forward
Lizzy (transition)- just like me Aiden is also in the social work major, tell us more about your path in social work
Aiden- Just like Lizzy…
-the 4+1 program, master’s in social work
-social work program at UNE is structured very differently compared to other programs at other schools (more healthcare focused)
-want to work in healthcare (my mom works in healthcare, LNA, perinatal birth registrar)
-wanted to help people since a very young age, excited to see what the future holds
-want to be able to help parents/families in need
-I was a premature baby and my parents needed that point person
-want to work in peds ICU, which leads us to Bobby
Aiden (transition): Bobby, what do you want to do?
Bobby-
Major and Why
- That was very interesting, thank you Aiden. The major I have chosen is Medical Biology, pre-med track. I have three significant reasons for my choice. One, I have always wanted to have a career in which helping others is directly involved. Two, My mother is a pediatric nurse and has had a large impact on my choice. I have seen her spring into action and help those in need as well as have an extremely positive impact on those she has helped treat. And three, I also have always been fascinated by human anatomy, as I think what the body is capable of is really interesting. With these three ideas in my head I have always wanted to go to school to be in the medical field.
Classes
- For classes, there are a lot of sciences. As a second year student, I have not yet reached the more medical based classes yet, however, the third year curriculum involves more of these medical based classes so I am definitely looking forward to those classes. The workload is certainly heavy but when sufficient effort is given to learning and studying the material, not only will you succeed, but you will find yourself motivated to continue doing well.
What Med-bio has taught me
- Though the chemistrys and analytical sciences is not my favorite subjects, I have always been very interested in class material that correlates to the more medical side of the department. I have had a fun and worth while time being in labs but I would say lab work isn’t for me as though you may have a group of people you are working with and the research may be fascinating, I would like to work in a more social environment but is something I will continue to consider.
What to do after Undergrad
- Like Aiden I am heavily considering working and being involved in pediatrics. I am also looking into orthopedics as continuing to work with and help athletes. Both options require more schooling after the four years of undergraduate, as well as internships. Though it will not be an easy road I am happy to be a Medical Biology major and work towards joining the medical field.
Lizzy- we all might have different majors with different career paths we do still have one thing in common which is we wanna help this society grow and be better.
Aiden-So, I guess that we’ve learned that our majors can go together! There are also a lot of differences, which is super interesting as well.
Bobby- Don’t go anywhere as when we come back, special guest Jesse Miller will be joining us to talk about his “biggest flex”. Stay right there…
